This weeks exciting flowers....

Posted on July 20, 2010 by Registered CommenterJennie Sivyer | Comments1 Comment

I have had several gorgeous first time flowers this week.  This is the thrill of collecting daylilies - seeing that very first bloom or in most cases the second or third bloom is even better.  I will start with my absolute favourite which is called Our Friend Sally by Jack Carpenter.

This flower actually had its first bloom 2 weeks ago and then several days ago we had strong winds and rain so I put this plant in a sheltered place as it is still in a pot awaiting planting into the field.  Then low and behold it had a flower which took my breath away.  The substance was very waxy and the throat was pure green.  I am guessing this plant will benefit from being planted in partial shade to see it at its prettiest.  It is a short plant at 20" with a 6" flower and is a diploid.

Starchild by Grace Stamile

This is a photo of the third flower on this plant.  I did not expect it to be this beautiful and the eye to be so blue.  It should be 2'2" when it establishes but is much shorter than that in my garden after one year in the ground.  The flower is 4" across.  It is a beautiful deep lilac fading to almost white around the edges with a beautiful large bluish eye and bright yellow throat.  The eye is actually much bluer than my photograph shows.  Gorgeous.

Cherokee Fables by Dale Hensley

This one is temporarily planted in a very shady area awaiting a new location.  Yesterday I saw this flower glowing in the shade and was surprised to see it had opened perfectly despite its less than favourable conditions.  The hybridiser describes the colour as  a ruffled rosy orange with a lighter watermark.  It is 2'4" with a 6" flower and is one to be watched.

Kermit's Scream by Richard Norris

I saw this flower 2 years ago when it was still in a pot but this is the first flower I have seen since it has been planted in the ground.  This is also its third flower and what a beauty.  A red triangular shaped flower which is quite flat with a HUGE yellow throat covering almost the whole face of the flower.  It is a little over 2ft with a 6" flower.  Very unusual.

Sebastian the Crab by Jan Joiner

A perfectly double flower on this pretty double unusual form.  The colour is apricot cream and it stands 2'8" with an 8" flower which doubles 95% of the time.  Good branching and high bud count.  Pretty single or double.  What a treat.

Patricia Corbett by John Rice

I never spotted this flower until late evening so the flower is a bit jaded from the hot sun, but I wanted to include it as it is so pretty.  It is a creamy pink with a delicate violet edge and bluey lilac eye outlined with violet.  A 5" flower on a 2'4" scape.  Enchanting.

Purple Many Faces by Ned Roberts

An unusual form crispate in a lovely illuminous lilac/purple.  I imagined it to be a deep purple and was surprised when it flowered in this lovely bright colour.  I have two clumps growing in different locations and they are both the same.  It stands at 2'4" with 9" flowers.  Looks lovely in a clump.

These are so beautiful! I just love growing daylilies in my garden. They are so easy and even survive here in the SW of Ireland where we get lots of wind and salt. They still do their thing and I get lots of magnificent flowers of them.
